FRAME YOUR DESIGN CHALLENGE

ask yourself:

“does my challenge drive toward ultimate impact, allow for a variety of solutions, and take into account context?”

dial those in, the refine until it’s the challenge that you’re excited to tackle.

STEPS

  1. WRITE YOUR DESIGN CHALLENGE

    1. short & easy to remember
      1. single sentence that conveys what you wanna do
    2. often phrased as questions
      1. sets you up to be solution-oriented and to generate lots of ideas along the way
  2. ARTICULATE AGAIN

    1. properly framed design challenges:

      1. drive toward ultimate impact
      2. allow for variety of solns
      3. take into account constraints & context

articulate with these factors in mind.

  3. DON’T GO TOO NARROW / TOO BROAD

    1. narrow → won’t offer enough room to explore creative solns
    2. broad → won’t give you any idea where to start
  4. DO IT AGAIN

    1. you’ll arrive at good soln by asking the right questions
    2. quick test we run on a design challenge is to see if we can come up with 5 possible solns in just a few minutes.
      1. if so, you’re likely on the right track
